Paragon of luxury and hospitality in the heart of the city
The Hilton Rotterdam opened its doors on 30 May 1963. For more than 60 years, it has been a popular hotel for both Dutch and international guests. Thanks to its exceptional service, staff dedication, central location and stylish rooms and suites, Hilton Rotterdam is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Architect Huig Maaskant designed the distinctive building, which still blends effortlessly into the city's skyline. It contributed to the tone set during the reconstruction of Rotterdam. Over the years, Hilton Rotterdam has continuously adapted to changing needs and trends. Besides creating an unforgettable stay for every guest, it has always felt connected to the local community. This anniversary is a milestone and opportunity to look back on the highlights as an icon of Rotterdam hospitality.
Hilton Rotterdam in 1963 was the fourth hotel in Europe to be opened by Conrad Hilton himself. On the outside, the building still reflects the time it was built. In the 1960s, it was seen as modern, with a façade of white concrete and glass, clean lines, a functional design and raised entrance. Soon, domestic guests, international tourists and business travellers knew how to find the luxurious Hilton Rotterdam. Over the past 60 years, the interior of the hotel has been regularly renovated to stay up to date. What has never changed is the traditional Rotterdam charm it exudes. For years, it has shown that the city is a cultural and cosmopolitan hub. One that keeps reinventing and renewing itself.
"Hilton Rotterdam is proud of its past 60 years of outstanding hospitality and commitment to our guests and community." said Jolijn Zeeuwen, General Manager of Hilton Rotterdam. "We look forward to celebrating this special anniversary and showing our appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the success of our hotel. It is an honour to be part of the Rotterdam community and we look forward to the next 60 years of inspiring guest experiences."
Hilton Rotterdam owes much of its success to the dedication of its employees. Long service and loyalty have created an atmosphere of continuity and expertise. For years, they have been carrying out what the hotel stands for: unrivalled hospitality and world-class service. A warm welcome and personal attention are an important part of this. Offering every guest an unforgettable stay, that is the aim of the professionals working for Hilton Rotterdam. On the other hand, the employees also go through a lot of things. Helen Verbeek, F&B waiter and working at the hotel since 1980, talks about her highlight in 43 years:
"This was definitely the Rolling Stones' 10-day stay. We offered them 24-hour Food&Beverage. The Rolling Stones walked around the restaurant here like it was nothing"
The hotel is also known for its extensive culinary offerings. At the stylish restaurant JAQ or at the cosy bar, guests enjoy classic cocktails and a shared dining experience throughout the day. At JAQ, local and international flavours are combined. A number of popular signature dishes that Hilton has always been known for have been adopted by the current restaurant and still adorn the menu. These include Rotterdam mussels, the Dutch Cheese platter, Rotterdam fish soup and Dutch Pancakes.
Through various initiatives, Hilton Rotterdam has contributed to the well-being and growth of the city. In collaboration with local organisations, charities and cultural events, it is always looking for the best ways to support and enrich the Rotterdam community. Sustainability, social responsibility and supporting local charities are key. It all starts with awareness among staff. Employees are encouraged by Hilton Rotterdam to stay socially involved, for example by volunteering in the region.
Over the past 10 years, a total of over 4,000 community volunteering activities have been carried out by employees. A special collaboration is with the reintegration branch of the Salvation Army in Rotterdam, which tries to get people distanced from the labour market back to work as soon as possible. The hotel tackles food wastage in cooperation with Too Good To Go. For a friendly price, consumers can pick up leftover food at Hilton Rotterdam after breakfast or dinner. Other examples include Stichting Jarige Job, Homerun Ronald McDonald and the help provided in receiving Ukrainian refugees.
