Clean water is vital, we all know that. Yet for many hotels, water management is complex and a legionella problem is always lurking. Holland Water offers solutions to this by providing safe drinking water and data-driven prevention. Additional advantage: thanks to Holland Water's technology, the water temperature can be significantly reduced.
"Holland Water has been around for over 20 years now and we focus on healthcare, hospitality and leisure," says Head of sales - Hospitality & Leisure Mark de Vaal. "Our aim is to provide our customers with effective watertech solutions for both prevention and control of legionella. The cornerstone of our work is our patented water treatment system HW Bifipro. The basic technology already existed. We have further developed it into the current high-tech water safety technology that we deploy worldwide."
The HW Bifipro system works on the basis of copper and silver ions. It is placed directly behind a building's water supply point and accurately delivers small doses of ions to the water. They go to work in the water system. "The ions prevent the development and growth of legionella and other pathogens in a very effective way."
With this system, Holland Water offers a solution to a problem many hotels face. HW Bifipro is only applied when those problems are already there. "The government assumes the high quality of our drinking water. Yet legionella contamination is common because hotels have very many taps. The bigger the hotel is, the more complex it becomes. In addition, managing water safety is labour-intensive. As a result, we were increasingly asked to do more in the area of water safety. Hotels are also looking for ways to save energy."
According to De Vaal, digitisation is indispensable to improve water safety and save energy. "This pays off for any hotel because it takes work off staff's hands and prevents mistakes. Smart meters and sensors provide insight, which can then be acted upon. Our HW Uvidis system can prevent legionella, and be used preventively as a gatekeeper." Through the high energy of ultraviolet light (UV-C), this system rids drinking water of bio-organisms at the entrance to the water plant. "Once the plant is structurally legionella-free and monitored with appropriate water technology, the hot water temperature may often be lowered by as much as 10 degrees. This results in considerable energy savings."
"For the hotels and hotel signs we work with, such as Van der Valk, Fletcher, Hilton and Okura, we have increasingly become an all-round supplier. We can give complete advice on water safety and solve the problems. For each hotel, we look at which solution suits them. Sometimes this is deploying the HW Bifipro. For other hotels, it pays to invest in the HW Uvidis. For other hotels, digital control is a better choice for prevention."
One of the 1,200 buildings in which a system by Holland Water is being used is hotel Van der Valk Schiphol A4. This hotel has 750 rooms. This makes it the largest hotel in the Benelux. During the renovation and expansion, the water infrastructure was also addressed. Hotel manager Bill van der Valk says: "In the pipes of some older rooms, we detected elevated levels of legionella, but with the previous measures we were not able to significantly reduce these levels. We were then alerted to Holland Water's solution, contacted the company and started working together. With their system, we then solved the legionella problem quickly and sustainably."
