'Transform spaces with bespoke murals'

The power of customised design wallpaper

Wallcoverings have long since ceased to be limited to simple patterns and repetitive motifs. Nowadays, the use of wallcoverings is a creative and strategic way to transform (hotel) interiors. One company at the forefront of this is Wandd, a young and innovative company that focuses on custom-made, high-quality wallcoverings for both the private and corporate markets.

Wandd's story begins with a special meeting during Dutch Design Week. At the time, designer Robin Sprong was already running an award-winning wallpaper studio in South Africa, making a name for himself worldwide. However, despite his success, he did not yet have direct representation in Europe. Merel van Gijzel, commercial manager of Wandd, says: "The diversity of styles and backgrounds of the more than 65 designers Robin Sprong works with makes our range so special. Each design is unique and fully tailored to the customer's specific space and wishes."

Customisation down to the last detail

One of Wandd's distinguishing features is that each design is fully customised. Whereas traditional wallpaper often consists of repeating patterns and standard sizes, Wandd works with murals: wall-filling works of art that fit perfectly on the wall. This means no excess material, no half designs and, above all, no repetitive patterns. The client provides the dimensions of the room and receives a unique design that covers the entire wall, even to the smallest corners.

This customisation is especially popular in the hospitality sector. For example, Wandd recently worked on the interior of Rooftopbar Strøming in Tilburg, where Avalana Design's Bodacious Blooms Magenta design was applied to several walls, even in the toilets. This design, executed on Airtex, was printed in one piece and applied seamlessly, resulting in an impressive visual experience. "In addition to expressive designs, we also offer subtle and sophisticated options for hotel rooms and restaurants, for example. It remains special every time to see how a well-chosen wall covering can upgrade a room," Van Gijzel said.

Versatility and durability in materials

Wandd also stands out for its use of durable materials such as Airtex. This material can be printed in pieces up to 5 metres high and 25 metres wide without seams, making it ideal for large spaces. Airtex is also water- and stain-resistant, making it ideal for damp rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens. The lightweight and flexible material is easy to install and easy to clean, making it a durable choice for hotels and other commercial applications.

A good example of the versatility of Wandd's products is their work for hotels and restaurants. Van Gijzel: "For a large hotel we are currently working on, we place large frames with cloth behind the bed. This creates a complete metamorphosis of the room within 20 minutes." This flexible solution allows interiors to easily adapt to the seasons or to new design trends.

For Wandd, sustainability plays an important role in their operations. For example, all designs are printed locally in the Netherlands, which reduces the ecological footprint. It is also possible to print on sustainable and acoustic materials such as PET felt. "Our materials are not only of high quality, but also aimed at minimising waste and prolonging the life of a space," he says.

International allure with a local approach

Although Wandd works with many international designers, the company also focuses on attracting Dutch designers. For instance, WANDD recently collaborated with Stefan Hengst, originally from Breda, but now a successful and leading designer in New York for 25 years. In addition, Wandd will soon launch an exclusive line in collaboration with Studio Boot, focusing on gold, copper and silver tones. "It's great to bring international allure to the European market, but we also want to give local designers a chance to showcase their work," says Van Gijzel.

Complete service for projects

Customers can easily choose a design via Wandd's website and provide the dimensions of their walls, after which a price is calculated instantly. For larger projects, however, Wandd offers a comprehensive service, from measuring the space to displaying the designs in full size before printing. Wandd will then also take care of the installation. Van Gijzel concludes, "Whether it's a striking design for a restaurant or a subtle makeover of a hotel room, we offer the expertise and materials to bring any space to life."
