Sofitel Legend Amsterdam begins new chapter with major renovation

Renowned luxury hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is on the eve of an extensive renovation including 175 rooms and suites. Led by award-winning French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, this transformation will honour the hotel's rich Dutch heritage while preserving historic monumental elements integrated with contemporary elegance and a French flair. The result will be an enhanced guest experience in line with the expectations of modern travellers. The renovation is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

Maud Bailly, CEO Sofitel Legend, Sofitel, MGallery and Emblems: "As an iconic, historic hotel in the heart of the capital, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is the perfect embodiment of the Sofitel Legend DNA. From the legendary Wedding Room to the stunning stained glass, this monumental building is in itself a journey through history. A historical monument in and new look: from the 15th century to the future

Nestled between two historic canals in the heart of Amsterdam, The Grand has been a symbol of luxury and sophistication for centuries and has deep roots in patriotic history. Originally built as a monastery in the 15th century, the property was first renamed a royal guesthouse in the 16th century, later the headquarters of the Dutch Admiralty and then Amsterdam's city hall. Throughout its illustrious past, The Grand has welcomed legendary historical figures, including William of Orange and Maria de Medici, both of whom have a special suite named after as a tribute to their legacies. Perhaps the most striking detail of The Grand is the Wedding Room, created by Chris Lebeau in 1925. The stained glass and Amsterdam School-style furniture create an intimate atmosphere, which is why the Wedding Room still serves today as a venue for weddings, private parties and cultural gatherings.

The hotel's transformation is being overseen by acclaimed design studio PYR - Pierre-Yves Rochon, known for its expertise in luxury hospitality interiors. Inspired by The Grand's rich past, the renovation shows a balance between Dutch historical elements and modern sophistication with a French touch.

Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon: "Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is a unique place where every stone carries its own memory of the city. Our ambition was to preserve and protect this heritage while experiencing it in a new way. Our approach is characterised by precision and every choice in architecture and decoration is made with respect for the site's heritage. Without compromising monumental elements such as the revolving door, high-quality materials and historical volumes, we extend the story of The Grand with the comfort and functionality of modern luxury. In this way, we honour the past without standing still."

A grand welcome: renewal of arrivals and hotel rooms

The renovation makes extensive use of Dutch art, which is combined with modern luxury and a homely atmosphere. Guests enter the historic courtyard, which pays homage to Dutch biodiversity, with peonies, tulips, hydrangeas and fragrant herbs. The redesigned lobby and central atrium bring the beauty of the garden inside. Restored white marble floors, oak parquet in the personal reception rooms and warm ambient lighting create an intimate atmosphere.

The hotel's 175 rooms and suites, including the Legendary Suites and a newly designed Bridal Suite, exude heritage and contemporary comfort. The interiors are inspired by Vermeer's soft blues and yellows, enriched by elements such as aged leather, high-quality woods and carefully chosen works of art. Among the most distinctive furnishings are the Temple Bed, a niche equipped with a daybed overlooking the canal, and a custom-made drinks cabinet to celebrate life. Hallways become curated spaces, with custom-made carpets inspired by Amsterdam's historic paving stones, antique Delft blue vases, French decorative mouldings and original artworks by Dutch artists. The homage to flowers continues in the Florista Tea & Cocktail Lounge, where guests can enjoy seasonal infusions, high teas and creative cocktails inspired by the floral arrangements in the hotel's lounges and rooms.

Stefan Melcherts, General Manager Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam: "With 600 years of history, The Grand continues to evolve while reflecting on its legendary past. Today, heads of state, celebrities, artists and ambassadors from all over the world feel at home in the hotel's suites. Guests feel privileged to stay in these unique accommodations steeped in memories and distinguished history. The Imperial Suites in particular offer a refined experience, seamlessly integrating modern luxury with historical grandeur. As such, The Grand remains an unrivalled destination for the world's most discerning travellers."

Sustainable luxury at The Grand: respect for the past, ready for the future

The renovation of The Grand takes sustainability very much into account and invests in green innovations, such as the building's insulation, geothermal heat generated on site and a new building management system that enables further steps in energy efficiency. The renovated rooms are designed with eco-friendly materials, including certified woods and natural textiles. It also makes extensive use of green elements to create connection between nature and city. The hotel's efforts have been recognised by external certifications, including the highest Green Key standard (gold), silver EarthCheck certification, Diversey's EHMA sustainability award and Accor's platinum status.

Expansion of the Sofitel Legend brand

Sofitel Legend is committed to continuous brand modernisation. The renovation of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is an example of this, as is the thorough renovation of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, including the restoration of the historic Heritage Wing in 2024. In addition, this ambition is reflected in the ongoing expansion of the brand. For example, three new hotels joined the hotel group in 2024, including Sofitel Legend The Mozart Prague in Europe, Sofitel Legend Pyramids Giza in Egypt and Sofitel Legend Jaipur in India, meaning that within three years, the Sofitel Legend network will consist of nine exceptional destinations worldwide.

Stefan Melcherts: "Full of pride, we are embarking on the transformation of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. After the renovation, guests will enjoy an enhanced guest experience, without losing the historical essence that makes this hotel so unique. We can't wait to welcome new and returning guests and immerse them in the harmonious balance between history and modern luxury that will characterise The Grand for years to come."

The renovation of The Grand is likely to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
