In the past, a hotel room with a bath was already pure luxury, but now they are increasingly being fitted with complete wellness environments. A specialist in this field is Cleopatra from Zaandam, an internationally leading producer of high-quality wellness products. One of their most renowned customers is Hotel TwentySeven in Amsterdam, where superdeluxe rooms are the norm. "Our suites are among the top in Europe," says managing director Eric Toren.
Especially since the corona crisis, there has been a trend of wellness facilities moving more and more to the hotel room. But in this respect, Eric Toren can be called a pioneer. Already some 30 years ago, he came up with the idea of offering hotel rooms containing a spacious double whirlpool in his then Hotel The Toren. "Back then, I had already realised the need for such a luxurious experience. It also proved to be of added value right from the start, as that extra wellness facility also allowed us to charge a higher room rate." For years now, Toren has owned Hotel TwentySeven, located on Dam Square and one of the most exclusive boutique hotels in Europe. His vision a quarter of a century ago to integrate wellness into a hotel room still stands. "All our suites include a steam shower and a double whirlpool. The need for privacy has increased, people like to just use wellness in the two of them in their own room. Moreover, the world has not become freer in recent years, but rather more prudish. Partly for this reason, our hotel also does not have a communal spa."
Tower has an extensive track record in the international hotel industry. For instance, he was managing director of the Pavilions Hotel Group with boutique hotels in Europe and Asia. "During that time, I also gained a lot of experience with leisure guests who are looking for a romantic stay with high demands on the decoration of a suite. Well, at Hotel TwentySeven, which with room rates between seven hundred and seven thousand euros is listed as the most expensive hotel in Amsterdam, we want to offer our guests the most luxurious experience you can have. We have spared no expense. For instance, all our suites include handmade bathrooms made of natural stone, oak floors with special Versaille patterns and bedding of the highest quality by Nobilis from Paris. The sanitary facilities are also top quality, including exclusive Geberit toilets with a shower function and heated seat. As a result, even a visit to the toilet becomes a kind of wellness experience in itself."
Hotel TwentySeven's mainly international clientele includes many royalties, celebrities and CEOs for whom only the best of the best is good enough, continues the Amsterdam-based hotelier. "Not for nothing were we also once named the world's most luxurious boutique hotel. But you can have such a luxurious interior, without top staff you are nowhere. For our sixteen suites, we employ over a hundred people to pamper our guests. In addition, we are still one of the few five-star hotels in the Netherlands where guests can use a private butler. Look, if you only offer luxury rooms, but without those far-reaching personal services included, you can never charge very high room rates. You can only do that if the guest goes home satisfied afterwards."
According to Toren, this attention to the smallest detail is also reflected in the care for perfect hygiene of the wellness facilities. "For example, the whirlpools are fitted with an after-blower to prevent stagnant tap water from remaining in the system. And Cleopatra's steam cabins have a timer so that the cabin automatically stops if a guest unexpectedly forgets to turn it off. This, of course, again contributes to sustainability and energy savings."
