Eliane Douglas- unique wall hangings

Being touched by art, no matter the form, is something magical. It soothes, amazes and connects, something we can all use in these troubled times. Spaces can also be transformed by the right art; it can make a location memorable because it instantly evokes the right feeling. Art has the ability to really enhance the character of a space, and the guest experience with it. My special wall hangings on linen, velvet and satin are a great example of this. They are inspired by different cultures, themes and period images and are very suitable to work out on commission, alongside my free work, to suit a specific history, location or family history for example. I rework old forgotten images with hand-painted details in gold and mother-of-pearl and finish the rugs on a wooden frame, or just as a loose hanging rug. But always with the, now recognisable for my work, thick fringe as a frame; a piece of jewellery for the wall! With this, I actually create an atmosphere rather than an art object. Something that guests might not be able to name directly, but will feel and remember! Collaborating with special hotels and locations that want to tell their own unique story, of which my art may be an essential part, is something I really enjoy doing.

About me
Born and raised in the east of the Netherlands, I studied, worked and lived in both the south and the west, eventually ending up in the centre of our small country. I got to know almost every corner of the world that way, and in all these places the urge to create (singing, theatre, visual arts) was always at the centre.

After my education at the High School of Hotels in Maastricht (1995) and fine jobs in hospitality and the commercial field, the desire to create physically kept returning. I felt: my heart lies with the arts and chose a different path. Since 2011, I have therefore not only been active in my own studio/workshop, but also work in various paediatric clinics, where I make a variety of artistic objects together with seriously ill children. Work that feels like play, that liberates, energises and inspires, doesn't actually feel like work. It is a place where magic happens!
