Yesterday, Conscious Hotels, together with Union House, Stadswaarde and more than 400 guests, celebrated the festive Grand Opening of the former Tivoli building on Oudegracht. During an evening full of music and memories, guests got an exclusive first look inside the renovated building. The official opening was performed by Margriet van Kraats, former director of Tivoli, and Eva Oosters, alderman of the municipality of Utrecht, with a symbolic push of a button. Today, the hotel officially opens to the public.
Conscious Hotel Oudegracht is more than a place to stay; it is a destination where sustainability, history and local collaboration come together. Located on the iconic Oudegracht, right in the historic heart of Utrecht, the property was originally a 13th-century convent, later the city's first orphanage and from 1925 a cultural centre. In the 1970s, it gained national fame as Tivoli, where artists such as Prince, Pearl Jam and Nirvana performed.
That rich history lives on in the interior: from a listening room with vinyl records to the cloister full of art and installations that bring the 750-year-old story to contemporary life. Organic coffee bar Sticky Fingers will open on the ground floor. Next door is Union House, a restaurant and cocktail lounge around the original stage, which is a lively meeting place and has been open since Friday 26 September 2025.
"On the stage where Prince and Nirvana once played, we are bringing this sleeping giant back to life, together with Union House and Stadswaarde. This time it's not about loud guitars, but we are opening our doors to the city again - in a lighter and more sustainable way," says Rob van Hemert, Director of Headquarters at Conscious Hotels.
The hotel has 46 stylishly decorated rooms, designed with an eye for detail and sustainability. The rooms combine the charm of the past with future-oriented sustainability: monumental elements such as authentic fireplaces and stained-glass windows have been preserved, while 3D-printed, certified and upcycled furniture adds a modern, sustainable touch. From solar panels to a fully organic coffee concept and shop - sustainability is at the heart of everything, making Conscious Hotel Oudegracht one of the greenest hotels in Utrecht.
