Staying overnight in your own hometown is always a bit special. Precisely because you know the city, you look at a hotel differently. Is the location right? Does it fit the neighbourhood? And does it really add to the way you experience a city? With that in mind, I checked in at Hotel The Match in Eindhoven, close to the city centre, on Kleine Berg. And right there, a lot immediately falls together: this hotel emphatically presents itself as a base for the city. Check in. Stay out. That's not a loose slogan here, but a clear direction.

Those who know Eindhoven know that De Bergen is a strong place for that. This part of the city centre feels more small-scale and quirky than the more functional centre around the station and shopping area. Boutiques, restaurants and creative addresses are a natural extension of each other here. Hotel The Match is right in the middle of this and that is not a detail, but the core of its proposition. Its location makes this hotel more credible than the concept on paper alone ever could.

Upon entering, it is particularly noticeable that the hotel is more modernly organised, without becoming impersonal. Check-in can be digital and self-service plays a clear role, but there is simply a 24-hour reception. That makes a difference. You are not standing in a chilly thoroughfare here, but in a lobby that feels remarkably homely thanks to the use of wood, plants, soft seating areas and a bookcase. This is also reflected in reviews: guests call the lobby beautiful, practical and pleasant to sit for a while or leave luggage.

My room was compact, well-kept and bright in design. No excess, just a neat and comfortable base. The photos show well where the emphasis is: a sleek bed, calm materials and an open bathroom solution with shower and sink in the roomscape. This looks contemporary, but is also the point that not every guest is enthusiastic about. In reviews, that's where you'll see the most comments. At the same time, comfort, cleanliness and bed quality are often mentioned positively.

After checking in, I walked into De Bergen for coffee at Lucifer Coffee and then further downtown. Just then you notice how logical this place works. Not because the hotel pushes you out, but because the city starts literally around the corner here. Addresses like Down Town Gourmet Market are also within pleasant walking distance, as are other places that make Eindhoven suitable for a compact city break. Hotel The Match understands well that you don't need to build a heavy internal programme at this location when the surroundings already do most of the work.
This is also reflected in the amenities. The hotel has a 24/7 Match Market instead of a classic breakfast buffet and also puts a strong emphasis on its own tips for the city. This is not the ideal formula for everyone, but it is consistent. Guests especially appreciate the hotel's central location, friendly staff and contemporary character. This makes Hotel The Match not a classic full-service hotel, but a bright and well-placed base in one of the most attractive parts of Eindhoven.
