One in eight hospitality workers think future technological developments will have a negative impact on their jobs. This includes, for example, the impact of AI, QR codes and robots on the hospitality industry. This emerges from research from Quinyx, provider of AI-driven workforce management software.
The biggest concerns of front-line hospitality workers are that technology could replace jobs in their sector (46 per cent) and that more technological applications will increase the likelihood of breakdowns (51 per cent). A small group fears they will not be able to keep up with rapid technological change (12 per cent).
Our podcast also talks about QR codes, listen to the clip below:
Quinyx's survey was conducted simultaneously in seven other Western countries in addition to the Netherlands. It shows that after the United States (19 per cent) and the United Kingdom (16 per cent), Dutch hospitality workers see technological developments as more negative for their jobs than the other Western countries. Norwegian logistics workers are the most optimistic, with 65 per cent saying they expect a positive impact from technological developments.
Although hospitality workers see technology partly as a threat, it also offers opportunities to improve the work for employees. "Scheduling rosters in the hospitality industry goes beyond simply filling shifts at busy times. With AI, rosters can not only be tuned to peaks in demand, but also better take into account employees' personal preferences and needs. This contributes to a better work-life balance, reduces stress and increases job satisfaction. And happy employees make for a more hospitable experience and happier guests," says Freya Swales, AI expert at Quinyx.
