Robust and durable sanitary fittings for heavily used hospitality venues

Vandal-proof solutions, water-saving features and easy maintenance

In hospitality and leisure settings such as hotels, sports centres and youth centres, sanitary facilities are often put under considerable strain. Intensive use, ease of maintenance and hygiene play a crucial role in these settings. During the refurbishment of the Flemish Youth Centre De Kaller, a conscious decision was therefore made to opt for robust sanitary solutions that are both durable and vandal-proof.

The youth centre, which has been a meeting place for young people in the Limburg municipality since 1990, reopened its doors in early 2025 following a thorough refurbishment. As part of this, the entire sanitary facilities were refurbished using solutions from DELABIE, which specialises in sanitary solutions for heavily used public spaces.

The aim of the renovation work was to modernise the building and prepare it for the future. According to the council’s technical department, there was a strong focus on sustainability and the long service life of the systems.

In addition, electronic flushing systems were used for urinals; these detect when they are in use and adjust the flushing process accordingly.

The toilet facilities were completely refurbished by the council’s technical department, ensuring they will last for many years to come. Choosing the right materials played a key role in this.

After all, in public buildings such as youth centres, sports centres or event venues, sanitary fittings must be able to withstand heavy use and potential damage. That is why sanitary fittings and accessories made from 304 stainless steel were chosen. This material is bacteriostatic, highly durable and particularly suitable for environments with high visitor numbers.

Vandal-proof design

An additional challenge in public facilities is vandalism. The youth centre has faced this issue in the past, which is why durability became a key criterion when selecting products.

Stainless steel sanitary fittings such as washbasins, toilets and urinals are designed to withstand heavy loads and intensive use. Furthermore, the fixings for these fittings are concealed, so they are not accessible to users and are therefore less vulnerable to damage.

For hospitality venues, this offers clear added value. Robust systems not only reduce the risk of damage, but also minimise maintenance costs and downtime.

Water saving and hygiene

As well as durability, water management also played an important role in the project. Modern sanitary facilities make it possible to significantly reduce water consumption without compromising on comfort.

Among other things, mechanical self-closing taps, such as the TEMPOSOFT 2 washbasin tap, were installed. These close automatically after a few seconds, so that water does not run unnecessarily whilst, for example, lathering up your hands.

An anti-blocking safety system was also chosen for the toilet flushes. This means that the flush is only activated when the push-button is released. This prevents misuse and saves water at the same time.

In addition, electronic flushing systems were used for urinals; these detect when they are in use and adjust the flushing process accordingly. This ensures that flushing only takes place when necessary, which further reduces water consumption.

Low-maintenance solutions

In buildings where volunteers or staff are responsible for maintenance themselves, ease of use is a key factor. This was also the case at De Kaller Youth Centre, where young people are responsible for managing and letting out the spaces themselves.

Sanitary solutions featuring standardised components, limescale-resistant aerators and built-in filters simplify maintenance and reduce the need for servicing.

This is a significant advantage for hospitality operators. Less maintenance means lower operating costs and greater reliability of the systems.

Inspiration for hospitality projects

Although the project is based in a youth centre, its principles are perfectly applicable to other hospitality settings such as hotels, leisure centres, sports facilities or event venues.

After all, intensive use, hygiene and sustainability are key factors everywhere. By opting for robust materials, water-saving technology and low-maintenance systems, operators can ensure their sanitary infrastructure is future-proof.

With solutions specifically designed for public and high-traffic areas, DELABIE demonstrates how sanitary facilities can not only be functional, but can also contribute to the more sustainable and efficient management of hospitality venues.
