OYSANA Spa brings together nature, warmth and tranquillity at Van Oys Maastricht Retreat

OYSANA Spa brings together nature, warmth and tranquillity at Van Oys Maastricht Retreat

KLAFS’ bespoke work integrated into the organic spa design by Rosenthal Interiors & Partners

Wellness as part of the slow living movement

Van Oys Maastricht Retreat is situated on the historic estate of Oost Castle in Eijsden-Margraten, close to Maastricht. This five-star superior hotel is part of The Leading Hotels of the World and combines historical heritage, contemporary architecture, gastronomy and wellness within a single sophisticated concept. The ‘HeART of Slow’ philosophy forms the basis of this approach: consciously slowing down and making space for tranquillity, mindfulness and balance.

At OYSANA Spa, this concept takes on a unique form. Relaxation, exercise, treatments and the experience of warmth are brought together in a carefully designed environment where guests can temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

An interior inspired by the movement of nature

Sara Rosenthal developed a design concept for OYSANA which she describes as an ‘organic natural spa feeling’. Curved walls and rounded passageways soften the architecture and divide the spa into open communal areas and more secluded spots for rest and relaxation.

The colour palette shifts from terracotta, pink and orange around the entrance and SpaBar to sandstone, green and copper in the lounge and wellness area. Textured materials, plants and subdued lighting enhance the tranquil atmosphere and the connection with the surrounding landscape.

“The spa journey of the future begins with mental relaxation, enhanced by sauna experiences and treatments that support the body’s natural healing abilities and help to calm the nervous system”, said Sara Rosenthal.

Bespoke design as an integral part of architecture

For the technical design and installation of the heating facilities, Rosenthal Interiors & Partners collaborated with KLAFS, which specialises in bespoke solutions for saunas and wellness facilities.

The saunas and steam room were not designed as separate facilities, but as an integral part of the interior. The choice of materials, dimensions, sightlines, lighting and technical systems have been tailored to the architecture down to the last detail, ensuring that the design and wellness facilities form a single, cohesive whole.

A heating experience with its own character

The interior design incorporates two adjacent sauna cabins: a Finnish sauna at approximately 90 °C and a SANARIUM® offering a gentler heat experience at approximately 60 °C. The cabins are finished in dark thermally treated ash, with sections of the walls featuring a refined slatted structure. The lighter sauna benches, made of abachi wood, add contrast and depth and blend visually with the warm brown and copper tones in the surrounding space.

Both cabins have a fully glazed front and seating on three levels. Their dimensions and contours are in keeping with the surrounding architecture.

The SANARIUM® is fitted with a heater integrated beneath the benches. This means that the technical components are largely concealed from view, allowing the cabin to retain its serene ambience. In a Finnish sauna, by contrast, the sauna heater is deliberately left on display. Hanging above the heater is an integrated copper bowl, from which herbs and fragrant extracts gradually release their aroma during the infusing rituals. In this way, the infusion system forms not only a functional but also a distinctive part of the sensory and nature-focused wellness experience at OYSANA Spa.

A circular steam bath as a tranquil focal point

The steam room was also created by KLAFS as a bespoke solution. Its perfectly circular shape is inspired by the monumental domed interior of the Pantheon and forms a striking feature of the spa’s design. A subtle starry sky on the ceiling and indirect lighting with the glow of a setting sun create an intimate atmosphere in which form, steam and light come together.

The curved benches follow the contours of the space and enhance the sense of security. In this way, the steam room aligns with the spa’s central design principle: to create spaces that not only appeal to visitors visually, but also help them to turn their attention inwards.

From treatment to the outdoor experience

Covering an area of approximately 650 m², OYSANA Spa comprises treatment rooms, a SpaBar, a lounge with a bronze fireplace and areas for fitness and yoga, in addition to its thermal facilities. Secluded alcoves offer guests the opportunity to rest and cool down between the various spa experiences.

The wellness experience continues outdoors on a patio featuring greenery, a waterfall and a cold plunge pool. Natural spring water from the estate’s own grounds is used for this. In this way, elements from the immediate surroundings are not only reflected in the materials and colours, but also become a tangible part of the spa experience.

With its carefully integrated KLAFS saunas and steam bath, OYSANA Spa forms a cohesive wellness landscape in which architecture, nature and technology complement one another. A place where warmth and water slow the pace and the surroundings invite you to pause and reflect.
