From the planting to the decking, from the huge water table to the seating elements, everything is right on the roof of this sustainable Van der Valk hotel. A roof garden with both sustainable and aesthetic class in Deventer. The design is a collaboration between Menno Boer and Farwick Groenspecialisten. For the execution, FURNS Straatmeubilair in collaboration with Awood BV advised to choose Corten steel and Bamboo X-treme from supplier Moso.
Together with designer Menno Boer, Farwick Groenspecialisten worked out a proposal for a roof garden on the second floor of the Van der Valk Exclusief hotel in Deventer. On the roof of this sustainable hotel, the green roof garden was then realised with materials from the so-called Staying Roof System of roof greenery company Optigrün and several elements of FURNS and Awood.
Bamboo X-treme was used as a decking board and as a furniture beam in the seating elements. Meanwhile, the project has aged beautifully while still retaining its natural warmth, which combines perfectly with the corten steel. All the corten steel elements were lifted onto the roof as linkable retaining walls and set in place by Farwick's specialists.
The roof includes prefabricated conical and circular corten steel planters and an atmospheric corten steel water table with a fountain and LED lighting. The water tables by FURNS are special elements whose round shapes add to the atmosphere and dynamism of the roof garden. The Corten steel fits perfectly among the greenery.
From the hotel rooms, the roof garden is mainly a 'viewing garden', attractive to look at during the day and late at night. The roof garden can be visited by guests or private parties. Visitors then have a fantastic view of the old Hanseatic city
Deventer. A large deck is enclosed by borders with shrubs and perennials. Large planters with trees and multi-stemmed solitary shrubs give the roof garden a special character with space to relax.
FURNS and Awood precast elements are ideally suited for roof gardens because of their low weight. A major advantage of the materials used by FURNS - mostly Corten steel, aluminium and bamboo - is that they are significantly lighter than concrete. Besides saving weight and thus constructive savings to the building, FURNS can provide significant time savings. Installing a prefabricated planter is much faster and easier. Think about setting profiles, grouting and foundations. Larger roof gardens require a lot of customisation. At FURNS, a steel element is fully drawn out in 3D and 2D. These drawings are used for the client and also for the personnel in the workshop. The drawing process is fully automated, from weld composition to 3D file. Thanks to the simple bolt construction, the elements are easy to combine with each other.
Corten steel is a durable material that requires little maintenance and is highly resistant to vandalism. It was originally developed for bridge and shipbuilding. Moreover, corten steel is an alloy without chemical preservatives. This makes it extremely suitable for recycling. As much as 30 per cent of the planters and borders produced by FURNS are made from recycled scrap.
In addition to tailor-made solutions, FURNS stocks a wide range of standard products that can be seamlessly combined with each other.
