Dutch startup reduces plastic in bathrooms

Baya Baya introduces powdered body wash with refillable aluminium bottle

Recently (15 December 2022), Baya Baya introduced its first innovation in the fight against unnecessary disposable plastic in the bathroom. A powdered vegan body wash with refillable aluminium bottle. With this new shower product, the young entrepreneurial duo Dirk Taselaar and Leon Daggenvoorde are reducing unnecessary plastic waste and CO2 emissions. Dirk Taselaar: "On an annual basis, the Dutch consume around 150 million disposable plastic bottles in the bathroom. This must and can change quickly. With this in mind, we started developing sustainable shower products two years ago, without consumers having to compromise on quality and experience. In the near future, we will introduce shampoo and conditioner in addition to body wash. We look forward to making Dutch bathrooms more sustainable."

Plastic consumption in the bathroom must and can stop

Per person, the Dutch easily throw away ten disposable plastic bottles a year after using them in the bathroom. Superfluous in the opinion of Baya Baya's founders. Leon Daggenvoorde: "The unnecessary throwing away of plastic is unfortunately not the only problem. In fact, shower products consist of up to 90% of water. This water is now transported from the manufacturer, through retail chains, to the consumer. This too is useless, as the same water comes out of the tap at the consumer's home. These two problems are the basis for us to start Baya Baya."

Making a sustainable impact without compromising on quality and experience

With Baya Baya, the founders focus on sustainable solutions where consumers do not have to compromise on quality. "There are currently several sustainable initiatives on the market, but in many cases these involve sacrificing on experience. This is a shame, as consumers are often not willing to take a step back. For us, it is very important to ensure that consumers retain the same experience in the shower. Only then will we activate the large group to change their behaviour. We do this by allowing consumers to mix the body wash with water from the tap at home. This way, we combine the best of both worlds: sustainability and experience. In fact, the consumer benefits. Not only in terms of sustainability, but also in terms of quality, shower experience and design," says Dirk Taselaar.

Sustainable chain: from production process to use

The entrepreneurs deliberately take the bathroom concept to the next level, from production to use. In doing so, they consider both the ingredients of the body wash, as well as the choice of materials for the refillable bottle. Leon Daggenvoorde: "As we want to change consumer behaviour in the bathroom, we have thought of everything in the wider process in addition to the sustainable benefits during use mentioned above. For example, the microplastic-free body wash powders are delivered by bicycle courier and our products are packaged in friendly grass cardboard. Furthermore, we deliberately chose an aluminium bottle, because aluminium can be infinitely recycled. Thus, we make the entire transport chain sustainable, from production process, to transport to use." In short, a sustainable experience, without having to compromise on quality and experience.
