Artimo: fire-retardant curtain fabrics with the look and feel of hospitality. Textiles that fit your hotel perfectly

Artimo is now 52 years old and has been a specialist in fire-retardant curtain fabrics from the very beginning. That specialisation arose at a time when permanently flame-retardant curtain fabrics were still new. According to Raymond van Hal, Owner of Artimo, it involves a development in the fibre itself: a flame retardant agent that is “baked into the fibre”. This allows the fabric to be washed as often as necessary without impacting the flame retardancy.

That technical base is still the foundation of the company. Artimo focuses on fabrics needed in many different environments, but has a particularly strong presence in healthcare. The company also supplies offices, ships and hospitality. Especially between healthcare and hospitality, Van Hal sees a clear overlap. In healthcare, a hotel atmosphere is often pursued, which is why he believes the same qualities can largely be applied in both sectors.

The development of yarns has changed a lot in that. Whereas in the past it was immediately visible that the fabric was a synthetic polyester fabric, Van Hal says modern yarns have now been developed to such an extent that materials such as wool, linen and cotton can be imitated. At the same time, the fabrics remain washable and colourfast. This is important for environments where intensive use, appearance and maintenance come together.

Sustainability is also playing an increasing role in fabric development. Van Hal points to innovations with sustainable materials and recyclable PET bottles. Fabrics can also be taken apart again afterwards, after which yarn can be spun again. This shifts the focus from just fire safety and appearance to a broader material vision, in which reuse and circularity become more important.

Another development is in acoustic fabrics. Whereas previously heavy, thick fabrics were needed to achieve good sound absorption, today there are special yarns that allow similar absorption in much more transparent and lighter fabrics. This is especially relevant in restaurants, where acoustics are “often a thing”, according to Van Hal, and guests can really suffer from a poor sound experience.

This challenge is compounded by the use of hard surfaces, such as hard floors and walls. This often requires a lot of effort to create good acoustics. Curtains can help with that, according to Van Hal. The innovation lies precisely in the fact that acoustic improvement is now possible without making the room visually heavy. Thus, fabrics contribute not only to safety and functionality, but also to “the atmosphere and feel in a restaurant or hotel”.

At Artimo, the development of collections is done in collaboration with weavers. The company looks at available yarns, what is possible with them and what customers like. Fabrics and colours are then developed with weavers mostly based in Europe. Artimo has worked with many of them for decades. Those long-term relationships are important because the company wants to be involved in innovations quickly and be able to try out new possibilities early.

Innovation is especially important in hospitality. In a care facility, curtain fabrics often stay longer, while hotels are updated more often. This requires Artimo to renew collections regularly. The company not only wants to keep up with developments, but also to show “what is possible”. When those possibilities are picked up properly in a hotel, it creates exactly the combination Artimo is aiming for: technical performance, safety, comfort and appearance in one textile solution.

Technological developments have made modern fabrics not only safe but also aesthetically pleasing: they can mimic the look of natural materials such as wool, linen and cotton while remaining durable, colourfast and easy-care. Innovations also focus on sustainability, such as the use of recycled PET bottles and circular production processes.

In addition, the fabrics play an important role in acoustics, especially in spaces such as restaurants where sound absorption is essential. Thanks to new yarn technologies, light and transparent fabrics can achieve the same acoustic performance as traditional heavy materials.

Artimo develops its collections in cooperation with European weavers, with whom long-term relationships exist. By continuously innovating and responding to customer needs, the range remains up-to-date and suitable for sectors where both functionality and ambience are key.

00:00:02,600 -> 00:00:04,920
We are now 52 years old and

00:00:04,920 -> 00:00:08,840
we have also been specialists from the beginning
in fire-retardant curtain fabrics.

00:00:09,000 -> 00:00:10,960
That was actually completely new at the time.

00:00:10,960 -> 00:00:13,600
That was a development
in the fibre, a permanent

00:00:13,600 -> 00:00:16,840
flame retardant which is used in
the fibre becomes ingrained.

00:00:16,920 -> 00:00:19,080
So you can use the fabric as often
possible washing if you like,

00:00:19,080 -> 00:00:21,640
but that has no
impact on flame retardancy

00:00:21,640 -> 00:00:24,640
We are actually from
the beginning specialising in those substances

00:00:24,680 -> 00:00:26,880
which, of course, on a lot of
areas are needed,

00:00:26,880 -> 00:00:30,120
but especially in healthcare we are
quite large

00:00:30,120 -> 00:00:35,600
and in addition, we also do a lot of offices, ships
As well as a lot of hospitality.

00:00:36,160 -> 00:00:40,120
The funny thing is that in healthcare, people often
pursued a hotel atmosphere,

00:00:40,120 -> 00:00:43,880
In that respect, the two things combine
very well, because we largely

00:00:43,880 -> 00:00:47,080
can use the same quality
in healthcare as in hospitality.

00:00:47,680 -> 00:00:50,800
You used to really see like, this is
a synthetic polyester fabric,

00:00:50,800 -> 00:00:53,920
and these days those
yarn so beautifully developed that your wool,

00:00:54,280 -> 00:00:57,400
linen, well, what I said cotton
all can mimic

00:00:57,880 -> 00:01:01,880
and the fabric therefore remains very washable
and is very colourfast.

00:01:02,360 -> 00:01:03,400
While still thinking hey

00:01:03,400 -> 00:01:06,200
I am dealing with a substance
who really has a very nice look.

00:01:06,680 -> 00:01:10,840
What I just mentioned is that the yarns are
are very much advanced.

00:01:11,080 -> 00:01:14,240
There are many more opportunities
and there is a lot of innovation

00:01:14,240 -> 00:01:17,240
with sustainable materials,
recyclable PET bottles.

00:01:17,320 -> 00:01:20,600
We can also
fluffing out the fabric afterwards

00:01:20,720 -> 00:01:24,560
and spin yarn from that too,
so that in itself is obviously very nice.

00:01:24,720 -> 00:01:26,720
In addition, have
your natural acoustic fabrics

00:01:26,720 -> 00:01:30,040
You used to need very thick fabrics
To get a nice absorption.

00:01:30,440 -> 00:01:33,920
And these days have
we special yarn, but which still makes you

00:01:34,360 -> 00:01:37,520
gets the same absorption,
er much more transparent, much lighter fabric

00:01:38,000 -> 00:01:39,320
and certainly in restaurants that is

00:01:39,320 -> 00:01:42,320
is acoustics
of course, often a thing

00:01:42,920 -> 00:01:45,920
where guests really
can suffer

00:01:45,920 -> 00:01:47,400
If the acoustics are not nice.

00:01:47,400 -> 00:01:50,400
Naturally, hard surfaces are often
used, hard floors, walls

00:01:50,600 -> 00:01:53,840
and a lot of effort has to be put in
To get good acoustics.

00:01:54,120 -> 00:01:56,000
And curtains can go very well with that
help.

00:01:56,000 -> 00:01:59,040
And that's really an innovation that used to
just wasn't possible yet.

00:01:59,360 -> 00:02:02,160
And these days you can
you solve that very nicely that way.

00:02:02,160 -> 00:02:04,480
So we really do contribute a bit to

00:02:04,480 -> 00:02:07,720
the atmosphere and feeling
in a restaurant or hotel.

00:02:08,000 -> 00:02:11,640
We develop
themselves with weaving fabrics, so

00:02:12,040 -> 00:02:15,840
we look at what are the yarns that
there are, What can you make of that?

00:02:16,160 -> 00:02:17,640
We try, of course

00:02:17,640 -> 00:02:20,640
to keep in mind
What our customers like.

00:02:20,640 -> 00:02:23,640
And then substances are actually
developed and then colour developed

00:02:23,760 -> 00:02:27,200
together with weavers who
are largely in Europe.

00:02:27,320 -> 00:02:30,320
Working there
we have often been working with for decades.

00:02:30,400 -> 00:02:33,200
Those links with weavers are for us
very important.

00:02:33,200 -> 00:02:36,280
Of course, we also want
like to get involved in innovation quickly

00:02:36,800 -> 00:02:38,600
and see this is something new,

00:02:38,600 -> 00:02:40,760
well then we will try something.

00:02:40,760 -> 00:02:43,440
In a care facility hangs
it of course often takes a bit longer

00:02:43,440 -> 00:02:47,320
A hotel, of course, becomes
much more frequently updated again.

00:02:47,320 -> 00:02:50,320
And that is yes,
Surely you notice there that it

00:02:50,360 -> 00:02:53,240
That we also need it
have to renew collections,

00:02:53,240 -> 00:02:55,760
To keep up with those things and also
to be a bit ahead.

00:02:55,760 -> 00:02:58,720
After all, we also want to show what
all possible?

00:02:58,720 -> 00:03:02,480
And we really like it when that is then in
a Hotel is well taken care of.
