ABB Smart Building for hotels: smart automation and energy management in one system

ABB is a manufacturer of electrical equipment and focuses within Smart Building on building automation for hotels, among others. According to Ron Beek, Business Development Smart Building at ABB, this involves not only controlling electrical installations, but also energy flows and climate systems within a hotel. For hotels, that approach revolves around a single integrated ecosystem. This allows different functions in a building to be centrally controlled and regulated. Within the hotel environment, Beek calls this the Smart Hotel theme: convenience for the guest, but also practical benefits for the hotel owner. For the hotel guest, that convenience is mainly in operating the room. Lighting, shading and climate control can be controlled via one control. Beek summarises this as “total system integration”.

ABB Smart Building for hotels: smart automation and energy management in one system 1

It prevents a guest from having to deal with separate systems or multiple control points for different functions in the same room. For the hotel owner, too, the value is in this integration. In practice, lighting, climate control and blinds are often supplied and set up by different installers. This regularly results in three separate systems “that do not communicate with each other”, according to Beek. ABB can bring those functions together in one system. An additional advantage is that such a system can be more easily linked to a booking system, for example. Besides comfort and control, energy management plays a central role. Beek mentions two developments: sustainability and stricter legislation. As an example, he mentions the GACS obligation, which requires an energy monitoring system in addition to a building management system. According to him, the first step is to gain insight into energy consumption: where does the energy in the building go? According to ABB, this insight is needed to then be able to make targeted savings or adjustments. “The next step is of course: where are you going to make savings, where are you going to make adjustments?”, says Beek.

An energy management system reveals where power is required and at what times steering is possible. This is also relevant for existing hotels looking to expand. Beek cites the example of a hotel that wants to realise extra rooms, but runs up against the limit of the contract value. Instead of immediately opting for contract increase or installing a battery, it is possible to first monitor where exactly the power is being used and where there is room to steer. According to Beek, ABB has experienced in practice that, due to energy management, hotels sometimes did not need a battery at all, or only a battery of half the capacity. At the heart of this is steering energy flows. He compares it to the public road: during rush hour it is busy, while at other times there is much less load. By spreading that peak load better over the day and night, the available infrastructure can be used more efficiently. This positions ABB Smart Building for hotels as a solution that combines comfort, system integration and energy control. For guests, that means simpler in-room control. For hotel owners, it offers one integrated system, greater insight into energy consumption and opportunities to better spread peaks before heavier measures are required.

00:00:06,840 -> 00:00:09,960
ABB is a manufacturer of
electrotechnical equipment

00:00:09,960 -> 00:00:11,560
and we have built-
automation,

00:00:11,560 -> 00:00:14,280
For sending your
electrical installation.

00:00:14,280 -> 00:00:15,960
So the flow of energy in
your building,

00:00:16,040 -> 00:00:18,280
but also for your climate
installation controls.

00:00:18,680 -> 00:00:19,960
And for hotels, that means

00:00:19,960 -> 00:00:22,520
That you actually have one complete
ecosystem

00:00:22,520 -> 00:00:25,000
have where you have everything
can steer and regulate with.

00:00:25,080 -> 00:00:26,280
Yes, the first theme
where we here

00:00:26,280 -> 00:00:28,280
Standing is for Smart
Hotel actually.

00:00:28,280 -> 00:00:30,840
And by that we mean,
convenience for guests

00:00:30,840 -> 00:00:32,400
or the operation of
your installation,

00:00:32,560 -> 00:00:34,640
but also
towards the hotel owner.

00:00:34,920 -> 00:00:37,880
And convenience for the guest
is that, with one control

00:00:37,880 -> 00:00:39,240
lighting,
the awning

00:00:39,240 -> 00:00:40,440
and can operate the climate.

00:00:40,440 -> 00:00:42,440
So really those
total system integration.

00:00:42,640 -> 00:00:43,880
What you often see is that we-

00:00:44,040 -> 00:00:46,000
yes, then there will be one
installer for lighting,

00:00:46,280 -> 00:00:47,760
one
for the air-conditioning system,

00:00:47,800 -> 00:00:49,640
Other for the blinds,
are three systems

00:00:49,640 -> 00:00:51,000
who do not interact with each other
communicate.

00:00:51,320 -> 00:00:53,560
We can integrate that
and the benefit

00:00:53,560 -> 00:00:54,840
of that is that you
have one system.

00:00:54,840 -> 00:00:56,480
That you can also very easily make a
can link

00:00:56,480 -> 00:00:57,800
to a booking system.

00:00:57,920 -> 00:00:59,720
If a room is not
rented out,

00:00:59,720 -> 00:01:00,680
That you say of well-

00:01:00,680 -> 00:01:03,200
if you have a lot of glass then that one may
air conditioning do stay off,

00:01:03,480 -> 00:01:05,160
then it may as well be thirty
degrees in the room become.

00:01:05,200 -> 00:01:06,000
Doesn't matter.

00:01:06,000 -> 00:01:09,320
On tomorrow's
is rented out though,

00:01:09,520 -> 00:01:11,560
then the system already goes to standby.

00:01:11,720 -> 00:01:14,200
At the time the guest checks in,
Then he gets another boost,

00:01:14,440 -> 00:01:17,240
so that the climate system
is just fine in the room.

00:01:17,440 -> 00:01:20,360
And when the guest enters, the
lighting also on a welcome scene

00:01:20,560 -> 00:01:22,560
or possibly open or close the curtains,

00:01:23,400 -> 00:01:25,120
That's how you can get that total integration.

00:01:25,360 -> 00:01:27,280
Well, energy management
is actually two things.

00:01:27,280 -> 00:01:29,520
You also see
sustainability, so

00:01:29,600 -> 00:01:32,000
we get legislation that
increasingly demanding.

00:01:32,000 -> 00:01:33,160
For example
A GACS obligation.

00:01:33,160 -> 00:01:35,800
So that in addition to
your building management system also has a

00:01:35,800 -> 00:01:37,560
energy monitoring system
must have.

00:01:37,920 -> 00:01:40,360
Well, it is now still monitors of
where does your energy go?

00:01:40,600 -> 00:01:41,960
But the next step is
Of course,

00:01:41,960 -> 00:01:42,840
where will you make cuts?

00:01:42,840 -> 00:01:44,160
Where will you make adjustments?

00:01:44,920 -> 00:01:47,200
And if you have that insightful
have, it can be much easier.

00:01:47,200 -> 00:01:48,920
Well, with us
Energy management system

00:01:48,920 -> 00:01:50,400
we can also in
existing buildings

00:01:50,520 -> 00:01:52,040
who want to expand, saying
of well, I have a few

00:01:52,040 -> 00:01:53,400
rooms there, but I'm

00:01:53,400 -> 00:01:54,720
against my contract value.

00:01:55,120 -> 00:01:57,320
Can we also
realise that they are nevertheless-

00:01:57,520 -> 00:01:59,360
well, not
always be able to expand, but

00:01:59,360 -> 00:02:01,480
start monitoring first,
from where is your power?

00:02:01,960 -> 00:02:03,600
And where can we
indeed going to send?

00:02:03,800 -> 00:02:06,040
And then you see that indeed
not always immediately

00:02:06,360 -> 00:02:07,920
you get contract aggravation.

00:02:08,240 -> 00:02:09,680
Or that you
immediately places a battery,

00:02:09,680 -> 00:02:10,640
because very soon there will be
called

00:02:10,640 -> 00:02:12,120
yes I need to put in a battery.

00:02:12,200 -> 00:02:14,800
But through our Energy
management systems

00:02:14,800 -> 00:02:17,080
In practice, we have already
experienced them,

00:02:17,080 -> 00:02:19,080
or no battery at all
had, or but

00:02:19,080 -> 00:02:21,080
half the capacity of
needed the battery.

00:02:21,680 -> 00:02:23,800
By just having those energy flows
send.

00:02:23,840 -> 00:02:26,840
It's actually just
as the public highway.

00:02:26,840 -> 00:02:29,480
So it is busy with rush hour,
but during the day it is very quiet.

00:02:29,480 -> 00:02:30,640
If you get that striker
a little can

00:02:30,640 -> 00:02:32,760
go spread out and do that
we with energy management too.

00:02:33,040 -> 00:02:35,400
Try that striker there
go spread out over the day

00:02:35,400 -> 00:02:37,640
and over night, making
you still put to good use

00:02:37,640 -> 00:02:39,200
of the networks can
going to have.
