Maryah Tahboub (19) from Amman, Jordan, began her studies at Hotel Management School Leeuwarden only last September, but already managed to make an indelible impression. During the HotelloTOP Year Event on Wednesday 15 January at the Horecava in Amsterdam, she was named Talent of the Year. This prestigious award is presented annually to a student or recent Hotello graduate who has performed exceptionally in the past year.
For Maryah, skateboarding is much more than a hobby. She first stepped on a skateboard in 2020, and just two years later she became the first woman from Dubai to stand at the World Championships in Aljada. What started as a personal challenge soon became a way to inspire others. In collaboration with skate brand Habibi, she gives skateboarding lessons to children so that they can experience the freedom of skateboarding just like Maryah.
Maryah also uses this energy in the world of hospitality, where she focuses on making an impact by emphasising creativity and connection.
The Talent of the Year Award jury unanimously agreed: Maryah's story shows how personal passion can contribute to social change. Besides her work with Habibi, she was also noticed for her role as a Nike ambassador, where she promotes diversity and inclusion within the sports world. According to the jury, she brings that same drive and fresh perspective to the world of hospitality, making her a deserved winner.
Marco ten Hoor, director of Hotel Management School Leeuwarden, is excited about Maryah's win. "Maryah shows that you can push boundaries with passion and perseverance. Her story shows not only her own potential, but also how young professionals from our college can innovate the hospitality sector."
With Maryah's win, Hotel Management School Leeuwarden once again shows that it is an important springboard for hospitality industry talent.
