Following an 18-month refurbishment, Van der Valk Hotel Emmen is ready to embark on a new chapter. All the hotel rooms in the original part of the hotel have been completely refurbished. The corridors and air-conditioning systems have also undergone a major upgrade. “There isn’t a single wall that hasn’t been touched,” says general manager Ton Duivenvoorden.
The distinctive exterior, in its original farmhouse style, has been preserved, whilst the interior of the hotel has been given a completely new look. Hotel Emmen holds a special place within the Valk Exclusief portfolio. It is the last Van der Valk hotel to have been built in the original farmhouse style. It is precisely because of this distinctive design that the decision was taken to retain the hotel’s exterior.
“The exterior is part of the hotel. Inside, however, it was time for a major step forward,” says general manager Ton Duivenvoorden. “It feels as though there’s a completely new hotel here.”
In recent years, Hotel Emmen has expanded from 76 to 140 rooms. The refurbished rooms have a tranquil, Scandinavian feel, featuring soft natural tones, warm wooden accents and high-quality materials. The design focused on comfort, functionality and sustainability. The rooms are more spacious and feature comfortable seating areas, making them ideal not only for an overnight stay, but also for relaxing or working in peace.
Behind the scenes, the hotel was fitted with a completely new climate control system. The traditional radiators were replaced by air heating and cooling. Guests can look forward to a pleasant indoor climate all year round.
Following its extensive renovation, Hotel Emmen is already looking ahead. Behind the scenes, work is underway on the development of a wellness centre, which is expected to open its doors in 2028. “We continue to invest to ensure we remain relevant, but always with a focus on quality, sustainability and the long term,” said Duivenvoorden.
