New career path aims to make it easier to enter and progress within the hospitality sector

KHN and HISWA-RECRON are mapping out roles, training programmes and career transition opportunities between the hospitality and leisure sectors

The hospitality sector has an ongoing need for new staff and faces the challenge of offering prospects to existing staff. From now on, there is a new instrument which is designed to help with this. The Hospitality Sector Career Path highlights the roles, training programmes and career progression opportunities available within the sector; it is also available for the leisure sector. In this way, the career paths also provide insight into the opportunities for moving between the hospitality and leisure sectors.

The career pathways were developed by Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) and HISWA-RECRON and have been published by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

Greater opportunities for employees and employers

The career pathways are designed for jobseekers, people changing careers, employees, employers, educational institutions and labour market professionals. They highlight the various routes available for entering the sector, developing your skills and progressing within the hospitality and leisure industries. For employers, it is a practical a tool to give staff a better understanding of their development and career prospects. They can also help introduce new staff to the wide range of opportunities within the hospitality sector.

A clearer picture of career moves between the hospitality and leisure sectors

By aligning career pathways in the hospitality and leisure sectors, these opportunities for career transitions are also made clear. This enables hospitality staff to see which roles within the leisure sector match their experience and skills, and vice versa. This promotes greater mobility and sustainable employability within the wider hospitality sector.

Udo Delfgou, director of KHN: “The hospitality sector offers a wide range of career opportunities. Particularly in a tight labour market, it is important not only to attract new people to our sector, but also to show current staff what a future they have within the hospitality industry. With these career pathways, we clearly demonstrate how you can join the sector, develop your skills and progress in your career.”

Geert Dijks, director of HISWA-RECRON: “The career pathways provide entrepreneurs with a representative overview of the core roles within both sectors and serve as a strategic tool for HR policy. Organisations can use them to easily assess whether their job structure and the level of staff training are in line with the applicable sector standard. In this way, the career pathways provide clear frameworks for the further professional development of staff.”
